This is not information about Maine’s revenue collection for $850 relief checks

The Maine Attorney General is warning residents about scammers posing as Maine Revenue officials claiming to collect information for relief checks.

The Mainers are eagerly awaiting the $850 relief checks promised by Governor Janet Mills. So much so, in fact, that they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make sure they get theirs. And, unfortunately, it’s no surprise that scammers use this excitement to try and cheat people with their money.

Attorney General Aaron Frey said residents should understand that Maine Revenue will not be calling to ask you for information.

Maine Revenue Services already has all the information it needs to issue these relief checks, so no one needs to share information to collect this check. As always, do not share any identifying information with anyone requesting such information over the phone without independently confirming their identity.

Eligibility for the $850 relief check is based on the 2021 Maine personal income tax return that residents have filed. The first set of checks will be mailed in June 2022 and will be delivered on an ongoing basis through the end of the year as returns are received. All checks will be delivered by the US Postal Service.

Information about relief checks can be found on a website published by the state of Maine. You’ll find questions about who will receive the checks and anything else you’ll need to do, like making sure the post office has your correct address.

Maine residents who believe they are a victim or want more information about identity theft should visit the State of Maine website.
